Plasma Display Panel (PDP)
Plasma is basically an ionized gas containing ions and electrons and scientists have invented a revolutionary display technology using plasma. The plasma display unit is made of two parallel panels made of glass, with the pixels burried in the middle. Each of these pixel contains three gas-filled sub-pixels. When electric current is applied to these pixels via electrodes, the gas in the cells are ionised. The ionised gas then emits high-frequency UV ray that stimulate the phosphors which result in them glowing to the desired color. Plasma Display Panel(PDP) is also called emissive display because it emits light whereas the LCD technology is a transmissive display.
Plasma display technology can produce high quality and accurate images due to the fact that the plasma gets its luminosity from its sub-pixel level. A plasma TV may have upto 3 million sub-pixels. Pictures and images created by plasma panels can be viewed from wide angles. As plasma display technology is based on innovative Alternate Lighting of Surfaces (AliS) technology, it can make non-progressive picture look outstanding. The ALiS panels share an electrode strip between two rows of plasma cells that result in the fact that only half the pixels will be turned on at any given time. Use of ALiS technology allows more illuminated area and these PDP panels also consume less electricity than convetional plasma drives.
The popularity of Plasma Display Panel (PDP) products has been growing very fast over the last few years. As plasma displays can be used both for individual and corporate purposes the market is virtually exploding. According to market research, the plasma display products will see approximately 74% growth in 2007 alone. Compared to the LCD, the PDP enjoys some advantages. The displays of same size and same quality cost less than the LCD displays. Plasma monitors are also said to have higher life span than LCD displays. Image retention by plasma monitos is longer than LCD monitors. All these make PDP the future market leader in the display market.
